For many international families living in Canton Zug, finding clear information about childcare support can be challenging — especially when the official information is mainly in German.

That is why we wanted to create a simple English summary of the Kantonspauschale Kinderbetreuung Zug, a cantonal financial contribution for childcare costs in approved daycare centres and registered day families.

This article is only a parent-friendly summary. For the full and legally valid information, parents should always check the official Canton Zug page directly. The Canton Zug explains that this support will start from August 2026 and that applications can already be submitted.

What is the Kantonspauschale Kinderbetreuung?

The Kantonspauschale Kinderbetreuung is a financial contribution from the Canton of Zug towards childcare costs in approved Kitas and registered Tagesfamilien.

According to the Canton Zug, the contribution corresponds to 33% of the average childcare tariffs in recognised daycare centres and day families. The support is not dependent on income or assets, as long as the family meets the eligibility requirements.

In simple words:
This is a cantonal contribution that helps parents reduce childcare costs when their child is cared for in an approved Kita or registered day family.

Who may be eligible?

Parents or legal guardians may be eligible if the following conditions are met:

  • The child lives in Canton Zug.
  • The child is older than three months.
  • The child is cared for in an approved Kita or registered day family, either inside or outside Canton Zug.
  • All legal guardians are working or in a state-regulated education programme.
  • A complete application has been submitted to the canton.

This means that the support is connected not only to childcare, but also to the work or education situation of the parents or legal guardians.

How much support can families receive?

For the period from 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2027, the Canton Zug lists the following amounts:

Children in Kitas:

  • Children over 18 months: CHF 47.15 per child per day
  • Children under 18 months: CHF 52.60 per child per day

Children in day families:

  • Children over 18 months: CHF 5.15 per child per hour
  • Children under 18 months: CHF 6.65 per child per hour

The total payment amount is rounded to whole francs.

When does the payment start?

The Kantonspauschale will be introduced on 1 August 2026.

According to the Canton Zug, the support is granted from the month following the application. Families who want to receive the payment from August 2026 must submit the complete application by the end of July 2026, provided that all eligibility requirements are met.

The support is usually granted for a maximum of one year, typically from August to July. If the family still needs support after that, a new application must be submitted in time.

What documents do parents need?

For the application, parents need current written proof. According to the Canton Zug, the required documents include:

  • Current written proof of the child’s care in a Kita or day family
  • Current written proof of the parents’ or legal guardians’ employment or education

The Canton Zug explains that “current” usually means documents that are not older than six months.

The official page also provides templates for documents such as childcare confirmation, employment confirmation, and education confirmation.

How is the application submitted?

Applications are submitted through the Civo online portal. Before using Civo for the first time, parents need to register with ZUGLOGIN and set up the eZug app.

The Canton Zug notes that this registration can take a few days, so families should not leave it until the last moment.

This is especially important for international families who may need extra time to understand the process or prepare the documents.

Is this the same as municipal childcare vouchers?

No. The Kantonspauschale and Betreuungsgutscheine are not the same.

The Kantonspauschale is provided by the canton, and the criteria are the same regardless of which municipality in Zug you live in. Municipal childcare vouchers, however, are provided by individual municipalities, and each municipality sets its own criteria. Eligibility for municipal childcare vouchers depends mainly on income and assets.

The Canton Zug also explains that families living in Zug, Cham, or Risch can apply for both the Kantonspauschale and childcare vouchers through the Civo online portal.

Important reminder for international families

If your German level is low, this process may feel overwhelming at first. But the information is important because it may help reduce childcare costs for families using a Kita or day family in Canton Zug.

Before applying, it may help to:

  • Read the official Canton Zug page carefully.
  • Prepare your employment or education documents.
  • Ask your Kita or day family for the required childcare confirmation.
  • Register for ZUGLOGIN and eZug early.
  • Contact the canton directly if something is unclear.
